INTRODUCTION:

A.  NO GREATER WRONG OR INJUSTICE.

B.  NO GREATER PAIN THAN BETRAYAL.

          1.  Aloneness ( Micah 5:7Job 19:13 )  No one to lean on – No one to trust.

          2.  Evil intent (Ez. 33:31),

I.  WHO IS THIS PSALM ABOUT?

A.  AHITHOPHEL ( 2 Sam 15:12 ).

          1.  David’s friend and advisor.

          2.  Went to the other side.

B.  HE UNDERSTOOD, HE SAW THE BETRAYAL BY ABSOLOM AND TOOK PART.

          1.  Somebody squealed on him (2 Sam. 17:21-23).

          2.  The shame of his part caused him to commit suicide.

II.  OTHERS WHO WERE GUILTY.

A.  JUDAS:

          1.  Honored by Jesus, one of the 12 ( Matt. 10:4).

          2.  Sought opportunity – Premeditated! ( Matt. 26:14-16 ).

          3.  Jesus knew! (vs. 25 ).  He still looked Jesus in the eye.

          4.  His repentance wasn’t real ( 27:3-5).  Sound familiar?

B.  SIMON PETER.

          1.  Not premeditated, a betrayal all the same ( Luke 22:31-34 ).

          2.  Not alone ( Matt. 26:31-35 ).

          3.  He stumbled – no vicious attack ( Luke 22:54-62 ).

          4.  Peter didn’t hang himself ( Acts 2 ).

C.  DEMAS.

          1.  A valued fellow-worker ( Col. 4:14Philemon 24 ).

          2.  What happened? ( 2 Tim. 4:9-10, 16 ).

                   a.  Love of the world? ( 1 John 2:15-17 ).

                   b.  Fleeing to a “better situation” ( 2 Cor. 11:26-281 Cor. 1:115:6-7 ).

III.  CAN WE BETRAY JESUS?

A.  BACK SLIDERS.

          1.  “Take heed” (Gal 5:4Heb. 3:122:1 ).  “Fall away.”

          2  Can’t be persuaded to repent ( 6:4-6 ).

          3.  The result of an attitude (10:24-31).

          4.  God’s feeling about such a betrayal ( 2 Pet. 2:20-22 ).

B.  THROUGH HIS DISCIPLES ( Matt. 25:40 ).

          1.  Aren’t some of these associated with betrayal? ( Rom. 1:28-32Eph. 4:31-32).

          2.  Have you ever been so betrayed?  Have you ever been the betrayer?

CONCLUSION:

A.  PETER ENJOYED THE HOPE OF FORGIVENNESS.  HE REPENTED ( Acts 8:22 ).

B.  IF WE REPENT, WE CAN BE FORGIVEN, TOO ( 1 John 1:6-7 ).

C.  WE MUST PUT OUR TRUST IN THE LORD ( Psa.55:221 Pet. 5:6-7 ).
