Rebellious Children

TEXTIsa. 30:1-17

INTRODUCTION:

A.  WRITTEN BETWEEN 740 AND 723 BC, JUST BEFORE ISRAEL’S FALL IN 722 BC.

B.  A WARNING OF PUNISHMENT TO GOD’S REBELLIOUS CHILDREN IN JUDAH.

C.  HOSEA AND JEREMIAH ALSO ADDRESSED THEIR SIN (Hos. 10:1-4Jer. 8:8-13).

D.  IS IT POSSIBLE FOR US AS INDIVIDUALS TO SHARE THEIR FATE?

I.      WHY WAS JUDAH CUT OFF?

A.  THEY DESERTED GOD WHOM THEY ONCE CONSULTED (Judges 20:18, 23, 27-28).

          1.  They refused the counsel of God (Isa. 30:1).

          2.  They trusted the shadow of Egypt instead (Isa. 30:2-3).

B.  THEY HAD BEEN LED TO DISTRUST GOD – LITTLE FAITH.

          1.  David learned to trust God (Psalm 57:1-3).

          2.  Jer. 17:5-7Isa. 31:1-3.

C.  THEY WERE MATERIALISTIC.

          1.  They were impressed by the materialistic wealth of Egypt (Isa. 30:5-7).

          2.  What they could see more impressive than God’s promise (Rom. 8:312 Cor. 5:7).

          3.  Concerned with numbers and physical strength (Isa. 30:1-3).

D.  THEY WANTED FALSE PROPHETS TO CERTIFY THEIR ERRORS (Isa. 30:9-10).

          1.  “I know what the Bible says, but …” (Isa. 30:11-13).  Tell God to get out of our way.

          2.  Same tune today (2 Tim. 4:1-4).

          3.  Will we despise the light of God’s word? (John 3:19-20Jer. 5:30-31).

E.  THEIR SIN LED TO DESTRUCTION.

          1.  Isa. 30:3Prov. 14:34.

          2.  Some see no danger in the one who teaches error (2 Pet. 2:1-3).

          3.  Their sin leads to the destruction of others (1 Cor. 5:6-8).

          4.  How much error can we fellowship? (Eph. 5:11Rom. 16:17-18).

II.     LESSONS FOR US.

A.  MAN’S WISDOM CANNOT SAVE US (1 Cor. 1:21;  Jer. 10:23).

B.  GOD REQUIRES OBEDIENCE AND RESPECT FROM HIS CHILDREN (Rom. 2:4-8).

1  Our lives must be lived in submission to his will (1 John 1:6-7).

          2.  Without obedience, we are none of his (1 John 2:3-55:3Matt. 7:21).

C.  GOD’S CHILDREN CAN FALL (Gal. 5:42 Tim. 2:16-17).

CONCLUSION:

A.  WE MUST LEARN TO TRUST GOD AND NOT HUMAN STRENGTH OR WISDOM.

B.  THAT MEANS DOING WHAT HE SAYS IN THE BIBLE.
