7 SINS OF AN UNSCRIPTURAL DIVORCE

TEXTMark 10:2-9

INTRODUCTION:

A.      TOO MANY ARE UNAWARE OF THE DEVASTATING EFFECT OF DIVORCE.

          1.       On the divorcees.

          2.       On friends and loved ones – their children.

B.      FEW ARE AWARE THAT IT IS SINFUL.  IT IS THE NORM IN OUR CULTURE.

          1.       Some say, “As long as you don’t remarry.”

          2.       Popular “Brotherhood Paper” editor endorses multiple causes.

C.      THERE IS MORE THAN ONE SIN INVOLVED.  THERE ARE 7.

D.      WE NEED TO STAND FOR GOD AND FAMILIES AGAINST DIVORCE!

SIN #1: PUTS ASUNDER WHAT GOD JOINED TOGETHER!

A.      DIVORCE IS PUTTING ASUNDER OF GOD’S WORK (Matt. 19:1-9).

          1.       The question: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? (vs. 3).

          2.       The response simply put in verse 6 is NOThis is God’s Rule!

          3.       The only exception: Where infidelity is the cause of the divorce.

B.      TWO DIFFERENT SINS ARE MENTIONED IN THIS PASSAGE:

          1.       Violation of the rule (vs. 6).

          2.       Marrying another after an unscriptural divorce (vs. 9) -(i. e. living in adultery).

C.      SOME BELIEVE IN DIVORCE FOR ANY OR MANY CAUSES.

          1.       1 Cor. 7:10-11 is often misused.

          2.       Deals with a divorce situation already commenced.  Not permission to divorce, but

instruction for when one has taken place.

          3.       God would never command not to do something (let not the wife depart) and then

                   sanction the law’s transgression.

D.      DOES 1 Cor. 7:10-11 TEACH TWO OPTIONS?

          1.       Do we have a choice to remain unmarried or be reconciled under all circumstances?

          2.       Does the choice to remain unmarried truly reflect repentance for the sin of an

                   unscriptural divorce?

          3.       2 Cor. 8:12.  Sometimes reconciliation is impossible.  The devorcee has no choice

but to make oneself a eunuch for the kingdom’s sake (Matt. 19:12).

Sin # 2:  DEFRAUDS OUR MATE.

A.      ONE OF THE BLESSINGS OF MARRIAGE IS THE INTIMACY THAT ENABLES US

TO AVOID SEXUAL IMMORALITY (Heb. 13:4).

B.      HUSBANDS AND WIVES HAVE POWER (1 Cor. 7:2-4).

C.      WE MUST ALSO HAVE A HEART (vs. 5).

D.      UNSCRIPTURAL DIVORCE IS HEARTLESS – ROBS THE MATE OF HIS DUE.

Sin # 3:  CAUSES OUR MATE TO COMMIT ADULTERY.

A.      Matt. 5:31-32.  A STUMBLING BLOCK OF TEMTATION IS PLACED BEFORE HER.

B.      WHAT IF WE CAUSE OUR SPOUSE TO STUMBLE? (Matt. 18:5-7;  13:41-42).

C.      JESUS DIED TO SAVE US, BUT OUR SPOUSE, ALSO (Rom. 14:15).

Sin # 4:  BREAKS OUR WEDDING VOWS.

A.      WHEN PEOPLE MARRY THEY ENTER A COVENANT.

          1.       That covenant includes the intention and promise that the marriage be permanent

                   (Matt. 19:6).

          2.       To enter without that intention is to lie (Rev. 21:8).

B.      WITH WHOM DOES GOD CATEGORIZE “COVENANT-BREAKERS”(Rom. 1:31).

C.      WE ARE BOUND BY OUR VOWS (Ecc. 5:4-5;  Psa. 76:11;  Deut. 23:21-23).

D.      YOU MADE YOUR BED (Psa. 15:1, 4c).

Sin # 5:  DESTROYS OUR INFLUENCE AND EXAMPLE FOR GOOD!

A.      PAUL INSTRUCTS WOMEN ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THEIR BEHAVIOR IN

THE HOME (1 Tim. 5:14;  Titus 2:3-5). “…that the word of God be not

          blasphemed.”

B.      ARE OUR MARRIAGES CONSISTENT WITH OUR TEACHING? (Rom. 2:21-24).

Sin # 6IS SELFISH.

A.      WHAT THOUGHT IS TO BE GIVEN TO OTHERS (Phil. 2:1-4;  Eph. 4:1-2).

B.      TO OTHERS IN OUR FAMILY (Eph. 5:21).

C.      HOW DOES THIS MANIFEST ITSELF IN A FAMILY? (Eph. 5:25-31).

D.      THIS KIND OF SELFISHNESS IS SINFUL (2 Tim. 3:2 and context).

Sin # 7:  IS SOMETHING GOD HATES!

A.      GOD HATES DIVORCE (Mal. 2:16).

B.      IF GOD HATES IT, IT MUST BE EVIL (Rom. 12:9;  Psa. 97:10).

C.      WE MUST LOVE GOD AND HIS TRUTH (Matt. 22:37;  Prov. 23:23).

CONCLUSION:

A.      A PERMISSIVE ATTITUDE TOWARD DIVORCE DOES NOT HELP MARRIAGES.

B.      WE MUST LEARN TO LIVE WITH OUR SPOUSES ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE.

C.      MARRIAGE MUST BE ENTERED INTO CAREFULLY BECAUSE

          1.       God intends it to last “until death parts us.”

          2.       Where we spend eternity is in the balance.
