INTRODUCTION:

A.      POWERFUL VERSE DEMANDING SELF-SACRIFICE.

B.      WHAT DOES THE SACRIFICE DEMAND?

C.      ON WHAT BASIS DOES GOD DEMAND IT?

I.      WHAT DOES THE SACRIFICE DEMAND?

A.      CRUCIFIXION OF SELF.

          1.       We live this life in flesh, an earthly tabernacle( 2 Cor. 4:7;  2 Pet. 1:13-14 ).

          2.       Our days come to an end soon enough( Ecc. 8:8;  12:7 ).

          3.       Willingness to die( 2 Cor. 4:7-12 ).

          4.       Living Sacrifice( Rom. 12:1 ).

          5.       Sacrifice of wills( 1 Pet. 4:1-2;  Luke 22:42 ).

B.      FAITH IN THE SON OF GOD.

          1.       What is faith?( Heb. 11:1, 6 ).

          2.       Where does faith come from?( Rom. 10:17;  John 20:30-31 ).

          3.       Gal. 5:6.  How does faith work?( James 2:14-26 ).

          4.       Faith without works of obedience( John 12:42-43 ).

          5.       My life and thoughts must be consistent with my faith( 2 Cor. 5:7 ).

II.     ON WHAT BASIS DOES GOD DEMAND IT?

A.      "WHO LOVED ME" - THE LOVE OF GOD AND JESUS.

          1.       Our place in God's creation( Gen. 1:26;  Psa. 8 ).

          2.       God's care and sustenance( James 1:17;  Psa. 37:25;  Matt. 10:29-31 ).

          3.       It was God who reconciled( 2 Cor. 5:18;  1 John 4:9-10 ).

B.      "AND GAVE HIMSELF UP" - THE EXTENT OF HIS LOVE.

          1.       John 15:13;  John 3:16.  Action( Rom. 5:8 ).

          2.       1 John 4:9-10, 19.

          3.       Not pleasant, but necessary( Rom. 3:23-26 ).

          4.       He died for us, in our place( 1 Pet. 2:21-24 ).

C.      Eph. 3:17-19.  BEYOND OUR COMPREHENSION.

CONCLUSIONTHE DEMAND OF THE VERSE IS FAIR.
