Three Men of 2 Timothy

TEXT2 Tim. 4:10-11

INTRODUCTION:

A.      PAUL IN PRISON AND IN REAL DANGER.

B.      DEMAS, MARK AND LUKE TYPIFY CHURCH MEMBERS.

I.      "DEMAS FORSOOK ME."

A.      DEMAS WAS PAUL'S FELLOW LABORER( Phil. 23-24 ).

B.      HE WAS WITH PAUL IN ROME( Col. 4:14 )NO HINT OF LAXITY.

C.      WHEN 2 Tim. WAS WRITTEN ( DURING nd IMPRISONMENT ) DEMAS HAD

          TURNED BACK.

D.      CHRISTIANS ATTITUDE TOWARD THIS WORLD( 1 John. 2: 15; Jas. 4:4;

          Matt. 6:24, 19-21; 2 Tim. 3: 4).

E.      DEMAS LOVED THIS WORLD.

          1.       He was soil with thorns( Luke 8:11-14 ).

          2.       We don't the specifics of what he went after.

          3.       Good beginning but bad ending.

F.      WE DON'T WANT TO BE LIKE DEMAS.

II.     "BRING MARK, FOR HE IS PROFITABLE."

A.      NOTE MARK'S EARLY MISTAKE( Acts 13:13;  15:36-41 ).

B.      "Not good to take him" vs. "Bring him."

          1.       Mark had proven himself( Col 4:10;  Phile 1:24;  1 Pet 5:13 )

          2.       Contrast with Demas.

C.      Person who will correct mistakes is often the best.

          1.       David vs. Saul.

          2.       Prodigal son vs. elder brother.

D.      Many  are like Mark. We should help them( Gal. 6: 1 ).

III.    "Only Luke is with me."

A.      LUKE'S HISTORY:

          Acts 16:10;  20:5 From Troas to Philippi - first journey. Joined Paul at Philippi on third

          tour Acts 21: 18. Thence to Jerusalem and then to Rome. Acts 27:1;  28:16.

B.      Still with Paul in second imprisonment( Phile 1:24; 2 Tim. 4:11 ).

C.      The church has and needs more "Lukes"
