The "Let Us" Patch of Hebrews 10

INTRODUCTION:

A.      SIN SEPARATES US FROM GOD.

B.      HEBREWS TELLS OF JESUS ROLE IN RECONCILING.

C.      JESUS PRESENTED AS A HIGH PRIEST.

          1.       Sympathetic( 4:14-16 ).

          2.       Perfect( 7:26-28 ).

          3.       Suffering( 9:11-12 ).

D.      THE PERFECT SACRIFICE MAKES POSSIBLE COMPLETE FORGIVENESS,

          THEREFORE WE MAY APPROACH GOD WITH BOLDNESS.

E.      UNDERSTANDING THIS WE HAVE 3 GREAT OBLIGATIONS,

          EXPRESSED AS EXHORTATIONS, HENCE THE "LET US" PATCH.

I.      LET US DRAW NEAR( vs. 22 ).

A.      TO THE ALIEN, A TURNING TO GOD FOR FORGIVENESS( Rom. 10:13 ).

                                                                     RELIANCE.

B.      IN HEBREWS:

          1.       Heb. 4:14-16.  Trust - seeking help in rough times.

          2.       7:25;  10:1.  Seeking salvation through service.

          3.       10:22.  All of this with emphasis on a tremendous and intimate trust.

C.      MUST DRAW NEAR WITH A PROPER SPIRIT( Lev. 10:1-3;  Matt. 15:8-9 ).

D.      ONLY AS WE ARE PURIFIED BY CHRIST

          ( Jer. 30:21;  Lev. 21:21;  Heb. 10:4, 10, 14, 19f. ).

          "having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience."

II.     LET US HOLD FAST( vs. 23 ).

A.      AN EXHORTATION TO FAITHFULNESS.( 3:6, 14;  4:14 ).

B.      FAITHLESSNESS BRINGS ABOUT A FALL( 3:12 ).

C.      TREACHERY AND TRAGEDY OF FALLING BACK

          ( 3:13;  4:4-8;  10:29;  2 Pet. 2:20-22 ).

D.      THE REWARD OF HOLDING FAST( 10:35 ).

          1.       God's house( 3:6 ).

          2.       Partakers with Christ( 3:14 ).

          3.       A high priest( 4:14-16 ).

          4.       A Crown( 2 Tim. 6-8 ).

E.      GOD HAS MADE PROVISION FOR US TO HOLD FAST.

          1.       His promise and oath( Heb. 6:13-20;  2 Tim. 2:11-13 ).

          2.       A sympathetic ear( 4:14-16 ).

          3.       Access to forgiveness( 8:6, 12 ).

          4.       Perfect example( 12:1-2 ).

III.    LET US CONSIDER ONE ANOTHER( vs. 24 ).

A.      CONSIDERATION BASED ON LOVE( John 13:34-35 ).

B.      LOVE MANIFESTED IN ACTION( Phil. 1:1-4 ).

C.      CONSIDERATION INVOLVES PROVOKING OUR BROTHER TO

          1.       Love.

          2.       Good Works.

          3.       Preparation( vs. 25 ).

D.      CONCERNED WITH PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL NEEDS

          ( 1 John 3:16-18;  Heb. 3:12-13;  Gal. 6:1 ).

IV.   CONTRASTING ATTITUDES CONDEMNED.

A.      NOT FORSAKING OUR OWN ASSEMBLING( vs. 25 ).

          1.       Drifting away, not drawing near( 2:1-3 ).

          2.       Not holding fast, but casting away( Heb. 10:35;  1 Tim 1:19 ).

          3.       No love or consideration here.

B.      SINNING WILFULLY( vs. 26-31 ) SINFUL ATTITUDE AND ACTION.

          1.       Setting at naught, not giving proper importance, value, - little regard.

          2.       Trodden underfoot the Son of God.

          3.       Counted the sanctifying blood common or ordinary.

          4.       Done despite to the Spirit of grace.

C.      SHRINKING BACK( vs. 39 ).  FEAR.

D.      ALL CONNECTED.

          1.       Contrasted with the exhortations.

          2.       Go back to a lack of appreciation for the sacrifice( vs. 19-20;  6:4-6 ).

CONCLUSION.

A.      LOOK AT WHAT JESUS MEANS TO US!

          1.       His death,

          2.       His priesthood.

          3.       Our access to God through him.

B.      "LET US" THEN FOLLOW THESE EXHORTATIONS.
