TEXT1 John 1:6-7

INTRODUCTION:

A.      THE COMPOSER AND LYRICIST FOR THE SONG “WALK WITH ME,” IS AL

LANGDON.  P. J. ZONDERVAN WROTE THE WORDS TO THE 2ND VERSE.  I

COULD FIND NO INFORMATION ON ANY OF THIS.

B.      THE DESIGN OF SONGS:

          1.       Teach and admonish one another (Col. 3:16)

          2.       Praise God the Father, and Jesus the Son (Eph. 5:19;  Rev. 4:9, 11;  5:9, 12, 13).

          3.       Declare our faith (Heb. 13:15)

          4.       Express our joy in the Lord (James 5:13)

          5.       Lift sagging spirits (Acts 16:25).

C.      SOME SONGS ARE INSTRUCTIVE – SOME ARE MOTIVATIONAL – ALL

SHOULD BE REVERENT PRAISE TO THE FATHER.

D.      OUR SONG IS CHIEFLY MOTIVATIONAL, APPEALING MOSTLY TO THE

          EMOTIONS.

E.      HOWEVER, THERE IS VALUABLE INSTRUCTION IF WE SEARCH.

I.      THE IDEA OF WALKING WITH JESUSFELLOWSHIP.

A.      NOTICE THE INTERCHANGE OF “WALK” AND “TALK.”

B.      “WALK” – A BIBLICAL EXPRESSION OF COMMUNION.

          1.       Adam and Eve (Gen. 3:8).

          2.       Enoch (Gen. 5:24) and Noah (Gen. 6:9).

          3.       1 John 1:6-7.  Must walk with ... Where he walks in the light.

          4.       Fellowship involves a manner of life (Eph. 4:1;  Phil. 1:27).

          5.       It involves a particular pursuit (Rom. 8:1, 4;  Gal. 5:16).

          6.       It involves obedience (Ez. 37:24).

          7.       It involves trust in Jesus to keep his word (2 Cor. 5:7).

C.      “TALK” – CONTACT, BUT NOT EMPTY CHATTER.

          1.       We talk to God by praying (Phil. 4:6;  Heb. 13:15).

          2.       Jesus and God talk in the Scriptures (1 Thess. 2:13)

          3.       To read our Bible and pray is to talk with God and Jesus.

II.     THE OBJECT OF THAT FELLOWSHIP.

A.      LEST MY EYES NO LONGER SEE [EARS NO LONGER HEAR].

THAT WE MAY REMEMBER. (Mark 8:15-21;  2 Tim. 2:7-8).

B.      WHAT ARE WE TO REMEMBER?

          1.       The glory, story, wonder, BEAUTY of thy grace (Eph. 2:4-7;  1 Pet. 2:24).

          2.       All the duty of your love (2 Cor. 5:14-15;  Eph. 4:1).

                   a.  What do we want men to see (Matt. 5:16)

                   b.  What do we want God to see (Heb. 12:28-29).

                   c.  The throne scene (Isa. 6:1-5).

                   d.  THINK!  WHERE ARE WE NOW (Matt. 18:20).

CONCLUSION:

A.      THE SONG REMINDS US OF THE BEAUTY OF CHRIST’S LIFE, SACRIFICE, AND

          FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM.

C.      IT CALLS US TO A PURER LIFE AND A DEEPER REVERENCE.
