TEXT1 Thes. 4:1-12

INTRODUCTION:

A.      vs. 1.  ADDRESSES OUR MANNER OF LIFE - WALK TO PLEASE GOD!

B.      DOING WELL, COULD DO MORE.

C.      THEY KNOW WHAT IS EXPECTED( vs. 2 ).

I.      A SANCTIFIED WALK( vs. 3 ).

A.      WHAT IS "SANCTIFICATION?"

          1.       Greek - hagios, "set apart, separate, holy."

          2.       Same as "saint."  All Christians are saints( 1 Cor. 1:2 ).

B.      TO WHAT PURPOSE ARE SANCTIFIED?( 1 Pet. 1:2 ).

          1.       Obedience(faith, works-man's part)( Phil. 2:12;  Eph. 2:10 ).

          2.       Sprinkling of the blood(grace-God's part)forgiveness( Heb. 10:19-22 ).

C.      FROM WHAT ARE WE SANCTIFIED?( text )

          1.       forn., passion of lust, ignorance, wrong his bro., unclean.

          2.       We are different( Rom. 12:2; 1 Pet. 4:1-4 ).

          3.       Striving to be right will make us different( 2 Cor. 6:17-7:1 ).

D.      THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES.

          1.       If we fail( vs. 6, 8 ).

          2.       We must succeed( 2 Thes. 2:13 ).

II.     THEIR EXAMPLE OF LOVE( vs. 9-10 ).

A.      WALK IN LOVE( Eph. 5:1-2 ).

B.      LOVE IS THE HUB( Mat. 22:37-39;  Rom. 13:8-10 ).

C.      WITHOUT LOVE, ALL OTHER GOOD IS WORTHLESS( 1 Cor. 13:1-3 ).

D.      LOVE HAS A PROFOUND EFFECT ON OUR LIVES( 1 Cor. 13:4-7 ).

E.      THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE( 1 Cor. 13:13 ).

F.      1 John 3:18.

III.    PROBLEM IN THESSALONICA?( vs. 11, 2 Thes. 3:11-13 ).

A.      "STUDY TO BE QUIET" - "WITH QUIETNESS."

          1.       James 1:26; 3:8-10; 4:11. "If you can't say something good."

          2.       A sober life( Titus 2:7-8 ).

B.      "DO YOUR OWN BUSINESS" - "EAT YOUR OWN BREAD."

          1.       Not our job to meddle( 1 Pet. 4:15 )yet( Heb. 3:12-13 ).

          2.       A problem did exist in Thessalonica.

C.      "WORK WITH YOUR HANDS" - "THEY WORK."

          1.  We work to provide( Eph. 4:28;  2 Thes. 3:10 ).

          2.       Idle hands, working mouths( 1 Tim. 5:13 ).

                   a.       Too busy to get into trouble.

                   b.       Lots of work to do.

IV.   THE RESULT OF WALKING TO PLEASE GOD( vs. 12 ).

A.      "WALK BECOMINGLY TOWARD THEM THAT ARE WITHOUT"

          ( Phil. 2:14-15 ).

B.      "AND MAY HAVE NEED OF NOTHING."
